There are bags you buy because they are useful. And then there are bags you buy because they mean something.
Every piece we create goes beyond the hands that made it. It goes back to a painting we couldn't stop staring at, an insect's wing, a color in nature, a pattern from a culture we fell in love with from across the world. That is really where it all starts.
Our journey began where most meaningful things begin: with identity. Growing up with Haitian roots means growing up at a crossroads of the world. Haiti is a nation rooted in African heritage, shaped by French colonial history, and touched by the indigenous Taíno people who first called the island home. A place where languages, traditions, and art forms collide and create something entirely their own. We grew up surrounded by that richness without always having the words to describe it. The colors, the textures, the intricate patterns woven into everyday life were always there, quietly shaping us.
Years later, life brought us both back to the same island, this time to the Dominican Republic, where we live today. And that is where Atelier Esmé truly began: as a conversation between two friends over coffee. We were talking about life, creativity, and the dreams we had quietly carried for years, when one simple question changed everything: "Why don't we do it together?"
But Atelier Esmé wasn't born in a market or on a runway. It was born from a love of fashion and a very specific feeling we kept chasing: the feeling of a bag that makes a woman feel like herself, but more. We wanted to create handbags that were special. Different. Pieces that bring a touch of femininity to any outfit, that add the confidence and the finishing detail that transforms a simple white T-shirt and jeans into something that feels intentional. That one thing that was missing. That is what we set out to make.
Every silhouette, every shape, every design detail starts with us. We create it ourselves, from concept to final artwork. We primarily collaborate with highly skilled artisans from around the world, chosen for their extraordinary talent in hand embroidery and beadwork, to bring our designs to life. Some pieces are entirely hand beaded, with every single bead placed one at a time. Others combine embroidery and beading, with each technique deliberately chosen to complement the design. Every finished bag reflects the dedication, attention to detail, patience, time, and love poured into creating it.
When you carry an Atelier Esmé bag, you are carrying a piece of art inspired by cultures we have studied, admired, and fallen in love with from across the world. It's something made for the woman who wants to walk into a room and feel confident.
